The paid Crime Analysis internship program allows students the opportunity for practical, hands-on experience in the field of law enforcement.
Interns will assist in supporting patrol and investigative efforts by supplying tactical analysis utilizing temporal and spatial analysis as well as gaining experience in administrative, strategic and operational analysis. In addition, intern development will include a police department exposure program with officer ride-alongs, shadowing communications staff, briefings/meetings and interaction with internal/external customers.

Requirements
- Minimum 18 years of age, no maximum age limit
- Currently enrolled in college and working towards a degree.
- Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above
- Must commit to completing the entire five-week internship program
- Complete a research paper or assigned project by the the conclusion of the internship.
Automatic Disqualifiers
The City of Lenexa Police Department will automatically disqualify any individual for the following:
General Conduct

Has been convicted of, or took part in, a felony or any offense that would be constituted as a felony within the State of Kansas or the United States

Has been convicted of, or took part in, the commission of a Class A or B misdemeanor within the past five years, subject to review

Has been convicted of, or took part in, any crime of a sexual nature
-
Has been dishonorably discharged from any branch of the United States Armed Forces
-
Has had a state law enforcement certification denied, suspended or revoked
-
Falsifying or lying about any information requested on a questionnaire or application as a part of the hiring process

Exhibited conduct or pattern of conduct that would tend to disrupt, diminish, or otherwise jeopardize public trust
Drug & Alcohol Usage

Any marijuana use within the past 2 years: usage outside of 2 years will be subject to review

Illegal IV drug use

Other illegal drug use, to include illegal use of prescription medication within the past 5 years; usage outside of 5 years will be subject to review

Manufacture, sales, or distribution of illegal drugs

Established pattern of illegal drug use or prescription medication abuse

Established pattern of alcohol abuse
Driving

Driving Under the Influence conviction/diversion as an adult within the past 3 years. Two or more DUIs in a lifetime

Pattern of traffic law violations that indicate disrespect for traffic laws or disregard for public safety

Three or more chargeable or at-fault accidents within the past 3 years.

Suspended or revoked driver's license within the past 3 years, subject to review

Does not currently possess a valid state issued driver’s license
Tattoos
- Tattoos which are visible while in uniform, or which are of an obscene or offensive nature.
- Tattoos which can be covered by the normal wear of jewelry or by department-issued sleeves will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Tattoos of a non-medical nature on the face, neck head, fingers or hands will not be allowed. Tattoos of an obscene or offensive nature will not be allowed.

Anticipated duties
Students will complete a total of 200 hours in the following areas:

Gathering and analyzing local and multi-jurisdictional crime data.

Extracting data such as arrests, accidents, and case history from numerous sources including the Records Management System (RMS).

Using ArcGIS as well as analytical products to geocode and analyze data.

Analyzing collected data to detect patterns, series, and trends.

Using crime data and knowledge of police programs and patrol activities to identify opportunities for proactive law enforcement.

Assisting in various crime analysis special projects.
We seek students who have a true interest in the field of law enforcement and crime analysis. Our program accepts only one intern per summer. You must have excellent communication skills, a positive attitude and a willingness to learn. If you possess these attributes, we encourage you to apply.
