A professionally trained flute player and a dedicated employee, Jennifer Martin joined the City of Lenexa in 2000 as a customer service representative in the community development department, knowing very little about government or construction.

“But, I did know how to relate to people and explain things simply,” she said. "I have always been one who loves to learn, so learning about government and construction processes gave me the opportunity to help Lenexa residents understand why permits are required and how to successfully maneuver the process.”

Today, Jennifer works as the city clerk and is the official record keeper for the organization. As part of her role, she is responsible for preparing the Lenexa City Council meeting agendas, packets, minutes, and supports the mayor and council members. While the daily business is essential, Jennifer is also known for spreading community spirit in the workplace, and that often brings staff together. From sporting her favorite Kansas City Chiefs T-shirt on Red Fridays and heading the City’s We Care Committee, to sharing zucchini bread and brownies made from a large zucchini that was harvested from the employee community garden, Jennifer brings a joyful camaraderie to city hall. But that’s just who Jennifer is –– she shares with and cares for her work family.

“I can’t imagine going to work without all of my favorite people around me every day, working together to make my community the best it can be,” she said.

In 2021, she graduated from the University of Kansas with her master’s degree in public administration. Throughout her seven-year journey, Jennifer was inducted into two honor societies. She is grateful for the support and financial assistance from the City throughout her coursework.

“The City cares about its employees by providing and supporting opportunities to learn and grow in whatever profession or position you’re in,” she said. “I was able to go to grad school and have no debt after graduation because of the generous tuition reimbursement program the City offers its employees. That had a tremendous impact on my career, the contributions I can make to my community, and my financial circumstances.”

When Jennifer isn’t at work, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, traveling, playing games, bowling, reading and watching game shows.

“I live here, I work here, I’ve raised my children here, and I wouldn’t change a thing,” she said.
