Trees and landscaping are some of the key components to improving the aesthetics of an outdoor space. Our energetic team maintains these components throughout the City of Lenexa’s highly manicured parks, medians and public buildings to ensure they are some of the best in the metro.  

This includes a variety of responsibilities such as landscape installation, general landscape maintenance, tree removals and pruning, and plant propagation at our polyhouse facility. The landscape division also assists with keeping the roads and sidewalks safe during inclement winter weather and helps support the fun community events.

Landscape job types

Seasonal

Seasonal positions last three to eight months. This position involves assisting with general landscaping duties, such as planting, watering and weeding areas throughout the city.

Landscape Park Maintenance Worker I

If you enjoy being outdoors, then this is a great opportunity. Landscape Park Maintenance I employees assist with maintaining the highly manicured landscaping and trees located throughout Lenexa’s parks, public buildings and medians.  Horticulture and arboriculture skills will be utilized for tasks including plant installation, tree and shrub pruning, mulching, tree removals, etc. This position gets to operate such equipment as skid steers, chain saws, stump grinders and chippers. 

Landscape Park Maintenance Worker II

This position performs similar tasks as a Maintenance I employee, but possesses more advanced skills and leadership. Landscape Maintenance II staff assist with overseeing the propagation of trees, annuals and perennials at our greenhouse and tree nursery. Leading small teams, attending the Kansas Recreation & Park Association’s Tomorrow’s Leaders retreat and successfully completing the Kansas Arborist training program in Manhattan, Kansas, are some of the exciting opportunities for this position. 

Landscape Park Maintenance Crew Leader

This highly motivated, self-starting individual assists the landscape supervisor in overseeing the daily field operations with a team-oriented approach. Essential skills for this position include an advanced skillset in the green industry, being a natural leader and having the ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently. Teaching and cross training the proper horticulture and arboriculture skills to other staff in the field are some of the rewarding opportunities with this position.

Most training will be hands-on and led by superiors, with opportunity for specialized trainings in a classroom to obtain certifications. There is a career matrix that outlines goals needed to move up from one position to another.


Frequently asked questions

How many staff work in the Landscape Division?

The Landscape Division consists of a supervisor, two crew leaders (one oversees the landscape field operations and the other oversees the forestry field operations), five Maintenance I and II, and two summer seasonal employees.

What equipment will I operate?

We train full-time staff to operate all equipment used to complete the job requirements. This includes stump grinders, chainsaws, chippers, aerial lifts, skid steers, etc.

Does the city provide a work uniform?

We provide all uniforms, personal protective equipment, safety equipment and cold weather gear.

What hours would I work?

A typical day is from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with a half-hour lunch. A modified heat schedule may be implemented during the summer months. Working outside your regular schedule is sometimes  required during inclement winter weather and community festival events. Any hours worked beyond a regular 40-hour work week will be accumulated at time and half. 

Is there opportunity for advancement?

Maintenance I employees may advance to a Maintenance II once the required skills and leadership qualities have been met. Promoting within the organization is a priority for positions above the Maintenance II level, if a qualified internal applicant is present.
