Recreation programmers and instructors work in first-class facilities such as the Lenexa Rec Center, Lenexa Community Center, outdoors at Freedom Fields, and in other various parks in Lenexa. Recreation programs include art, dance, karate, youth sports and more. We offer flexible schedules for classes that fit every age and demographic.

Program instructor job types

Dance Instructor

Our Shining Stars dance program offers affordable dance classes for children (starting at age 3) to senior citizens. A variety of disciplines and movements are taught, and all abilities are welcomed. Instructors are qualified professionals, with many years of teaching and performing experience. New instructors are added to our team based on program and department needs. 

Karate Instructor

Our karate program is part of the Japan Karate-Do Ryobu-Kai and offers instructors a chance to make an impact through teaching students as they move through the ranks in Shindo Jinen Ryu. This traditional Japanese karate style covers basic techniques, self-defense and learning competition-style kata. New instructors must meet specific dojo requirements and will be added based on demand. 

Art Instructor

Join our team for an opportunity to make a positive impact on participants by helping them better themselves through creativity. Art instructors are given the flexibility to create lesson plans and a schedule unique to their art classes. We are always looking to add to our lineup of programs and activities. 

Youth Sports Instructor 

Do you enjoy working with children? Do you enjoy sports? This may be the job for you!  We have multiple youth sports leagues including basketball, T-ball, soccer and basketball, as well as a variety of sports introductory child/parent classes. Our team is always looking for instructors who are interested in teaching children of all abilities and ages on how to love and grow their skills. 

Senior Program Instructor

Based at the Lenexa Senior Center, this role is a great fit for someone who loves the senior citizen population. This role facilitates programs and activities, and develops new ways for participants to socialize with one another. Daily programs at the Senior Center include bingo, movies, pinochle, bridge, Nintendo Wii and many more! 


Lenexa Farmers Market job types

The Lenexa Farmers Market provides the community with locally grown, raised and made products. The Market operates on Saturdays and Tuesdays throughout the regular season, along with several holiday and winter markets. The outdoor Market is held in the first level of the parking garage on Lenexa's civic campus, south of the Lenexa Rec Center. Staff take pride in upholding the mission and values of the organization and have received high satisfaction ratings from vendors and customers. 

Both Market Attendant 1 and 2 positions are responsible for the overall daily operation of the Lenexa Farmers Market and work closely together.  

Market Attendant 1

The Market Attendant 1 position has a strong customer service focus for those visiting the information booth. Knowledge of farming, gardening or cooking allows this person to have great interactions with the public. In addition, this position sets up and takes down traffic barricades, enforces rules and guidelines, helps with special events, day-of layout of vendors, and reconciles transactions at the end of each market day. 

Market Attendant 2

The Market Attendant 2 position is responsible for all duties of Market Attendant 1, as well as enhanced interactions with current farmers and vendors to ensure longevity at our market, and they play a key role in recruiting new vendors. This position assists with marketing, farm visits, vendor layout prior to market day, recruiting and scheduling of volunteers and staff.

Is there a dress code?

Each position has a dress code and the policy is explained during the hiring process. If Parks & Recreation branded shirts are required, one will be provided at no charge.

How are class schedules created?

Each instructor works with their supervisor to create a class schedule that fits the needs of the participants and the department.

How often do staff get paid?

Team members are paid every two weeks on a Friday. Paychecks are automatically deposited into a checking or savings account.

What kind of staff orientation and training do you provide?

It is vital to the success of team members within their position to train properly. Each supervisor has their own process and timeline for orientation and training. Make sure to ask this question during your interview.

What type of working environment can I expect?

Given the variety of positions within our department, positions may require long periods of standing or sitting in various environments and possible weather conditions.

What type of travel is required?

Use of a City vehicle to travel to various facility or park locations may be required.
