The City of Festivals has some star-spangled events lined up to keep your 2022 holiday weekend dandy.

Strutt your mutt in the Paw-triotic Pet Parade July 2 at the Lenexa Public Market. This event features pet-related pop-up vendors, training demonstrations and treats for dogs and humans alike. Event starts at 9 a.m. Parade at 11 a.m.

While you’re at the civic campus, shop the Lenexa Farmers Market for your 4th of July fare. From barbeque sauce, rubs and seasonings, to salsa and fruit vinegars, your dishes will explode with flavor. Shop 8 a.m. to noon July 2.

Nothing says summer fun quite like a splash in the pool. Jump in at one of our three outdoor pools — Ad Astra, Flat Rock Creek and Indian Trails Aquatic Center — open daily at noon.

Ready to escape the heat? Join us indoors at Community Covenant Church for a free classical music performance by the Lenexa Community Orchestra. The concert starts at 7 p.m. July 2.

Refresh on Sunday because the Lenexa Freedom Run starts bright and early at 7 a.m. on Monday, July 4. This family-friendly 5K or 10K race in Old Town Lenexa is open to runners and walkers alike. Register in advance of race day and save $5.

After the race, grab your lawn chairs or blankets and settle in for the Community Days Parade at 10 a.m. in Old Town. The theme for this hometown tradition is “Good Ol’ Summertime.”

Finally, as the sun sets, remember that fireworks are illegal in Lenexa. However, sparklers, smoke bombs and paper caps with less than .25 grain of explosives are legal. So, keep calm and sparkle on, but please be safe. Consider glow sticks for the kids. (The City of Lenexa will host its annual fireworks display during the Lenexa Chili Challenge on Oct. 7.)

Holiday closures

City of Lenexa offices, the Lenexa Community Center, Lenexa Senior Center and Lenexa Rec Center are all closed Monday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day. The Lenexa Public Market will close early at 4 p.m.
