Before spring rainstorms arrive, think ahead about to prevent flood risks in your home, in your yard or on the road.

Be prepared for roadway flooding

You may encounter water over the road at some locations in Lenexa during large rain events. Never try to drive across flooded roadways —just a few inches of water can sweep away an adult or a vehicle. It’s never safe to drive or walk into flood waters. Make sure you know alternative evacuation routes in case of roadway flooding.

Elevate valuables to protect them from water

Always keep important documents elevated. Retrofitting techniques — like elevating your heating and air conditioning system — can also help protect valuable property.

Don’t dump in drains

To prevent flooding, it’s important to keep conveyance systems like storm drains and streams clean and clear of debris. Per Lenexa Code, it’s illegal to dump trash or yard waste like leaves and grass in waterways. To report illegal dumping, call 913.477.7500.

Know your flood risk

Do you need information about your flood risk to get insurance or buy a home? Have some general questions about flooding? We can help!

The City of Lenexa will provide this information at your request:

  • Whether a property is in or out of the Flood Hazard Area as shown on the current Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) of Johnson County.
  • Whether a property is in or out of the floodway or near an area where the problems aren’t shown on the FIRM.
  • Flood insurance data for a site, such as the FIRM zone and base flood elevation or depth if shown on the FIRM.
  • Whether a property is in or near an area of historic flooding and/or a natural function floodplain.
  • A handout on the flood insurance purchase requirement that can help people who need a mortgage or loan for a property in the Flood Hazard Area. Flood insurance is required for federally backed loans.

To obtain any of this information, answers to questions about flooding on your property or discuss property protection measures, contact Stormwater Engineer Tom Jacobs at 913.477.7644 or [email protected].
