For the fifth consecutive time, the Lenexa Fire Department has been accredited by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) at today’s commission hearing in Denver, Colorado. There are only 301 international agencies who have received accreditation from CFAI, placing the Lenexa Fire Department among the nation’s elite.

“We are humbled to have received unanimous approval from the CFAI to maintain accredited agency status,” said Fire Chief Travis Vaughn. “This accomplishment is not possible without the support of our community, governing body, professional staff and external partners as we continue to work towards meeting industry best practices in our pursuit of excellence. The conditions necessary to meet accreditation performance standards requires significant investment and is a testament to the professionalism and commitment of our membership.”

CFAI accreditation is a comprehensive self-assessment and quality improvement model that enables organizations to examine past, current and future service levels and internal performance and compare them to current research and industry best practices. This process leads to a more efficient and effective emergency service organization.

The Lenexa Fire Department was first accredited in 2002 and was the first department in the state of Kansas to earn the distinction.
In addition to accreditation, the Lenexa Fire Department has earned an elite Insurance Services Office (ISO) Class 1 rating. Only a fraction of one percent of fire departments earns this top rating, which measures the quality and effectiveness of municipal fire protection. Of the 301 currently accredited fire agencies, only 114 (38%) across the country have also earned an ISO Class 1 rating.

Lenexa City Manager Beccy Yocham and Johnson County Emergency Communications Center Operations Manager Kate Dorsey joined Fire Chief Travis Vaughn, Battalion Chief Tom Miller and Battalion Chief Randy Pommenville at the accreditation commission hearing.
