KTWU Sunflower Journeys: Visions of the future (City Center portion starts at 10:40)
A result of a community-driven planning process, Vision 2020, Lenexa City Center is Lenexa’s new downtown. Combining a mix of shopping, restaurants, entertainment venues, offices, living options, and hotels, this exciting and walkable neighborhood is located at 87th Street Parkway and Renner Boulevard. The 200-acre district is conveniently located along highly-traveled Interstate 435 and is less than a few miles from the Johnson County Gateway Interchange where Interstates 35 and 435, U.S. 69, K-10, and K-7 meet. A short 15-minute walk from Shawnee Mission Park, City Center is a true live/work environment with high levels of urban design and architectural quality.
City Center Neighborhood Design Guidelines
In an around City Center are living options for everyone. There are apartments and lofts, small lot maintenance provided homes, twin villas, and single family subdivisions with golf course views – all within just a few minutes of the neighborhood. Existing eateries like Ignite, Grand Street Café, Saints Pub + Patio, and the Lenexa Public Market, as well as business headquarters like B.E. Smith, K-Coe Isom, and Kiewit are paving the way for even more retail and office opportunities that are under construction or coming soon.
Public institutions are also creating gathering spaces for the community at Lenexa City Center – including civic, cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities. In 2017, the City opened a 200,000-square-foot campus, including a new City Hall, Park University, the Lenexa Public Market, and Lenexa Rec Center. The Shawnee Mission School District opened a 1,200-seat competitive aquatics facility in November 2019 and the Johnson County Library system opened the new Lenexa City Center branch library in June 2019. Work has been ongoing for the past several years, so check out the map below to see some of the things happening at our new downtown!
