According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), one-third of home decoration fires are caused by candles. Consider using battery-operated flameless candles to eliminate this risk. If you can’t resist the flickering flame and aroma of a real candle, follow these tips.

Trim the candle wick to ¼ inch before lighting to prevent the flame from getting too tall.

Only use candles in containers specifically designed for candles. Make sure the container won’t catch fire or fall over.

Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can catch on fire, such as furniture, curtains and other decorations.
Almost one-third of home Christmas tree fires are due to electrical problems, according to the NFPA. Using decorations that are flame resistant or retardant can reduce the risk, but keep the following in mind.

Inspect string lights every year before use. Recycle them if they are worn or broken. You can recycle holiday lights at local Westlake Ace Hardware locations.

Use clips made for hanging lights — not staples or nails that could damage the cord.

There is a difference between indoor and outdoor lights, so follow all the manufacturer’s recommendations.
