Conveniently get your dog or cat vaccinated against rabies and other diseases at a drive-through clinic on Aug. 26. The Lenexa Police Department is partnering with the Pet Resource Center of Kansas City to host this event from 9 a.m. to noon at the Lenexa Public Safety Complex, 12500 87th St. Pkwy.

No appointments are needed. Vaccinations are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The first ten dogs who get vaccinated and can provide proof of a current Lenexa pet license will get a free voucher to the Paws in the Pool dog swim at Ad Astra Pool on Sept. 7. 

Services available include:

• Single vaccinations ($20 each)
• Puppies and kittens ($20, must be four months or younger): Deworming; DA2PP vaccine (Four dog diseases: distemper, adenovirus-2, parainfluenza and parvovirus) or FVRCP vaccine (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus and Panleukopenia)
• Cat bundle ($30): Rabies vaccine, FVCRP vaccine, microchip
• Dog bundle ($40): Rabies vaccine, DA2PP vaccine, Bordetella vaccine, microchip

Rabies vaccines are legally required in Lenexa, and you must provide proof of vaccination to license your pet. We’ll also have staff available to process pet licenses – these are required for all dogs and cats more than six months old.

Why does my pet need vaccinated against rabies?

Rabies is a fatal disease spread by infected mammals. If rabies is left untreated or treated after symptoms appear in a pet or human, they will die.

Before 1960, most rabies cases reported in the United States were in domestic animals – especially dogs. In other parts of the world, exposure to rabid dogs is the cause of nearly all human rabies deaths. But because of vaccination laws, dogs only make up about 1% of rabid animals reported in the U.S. each year.

Today, the most common rabies carriers in the U.S. are wild animals you might find in your yard or at the park. – like bats, raccoons, skunks and foxes. Infected bats are the leading cause of human rabies infections and deaths in the U.S. They typically leave very small bites or scratches, which you may not even notice on your pet.

Why does my pet need a city license?

In short, animal licenses help protect your pet and other animals and people they meet.

• Pet licenses tell everyone that your pet is not a stray and help reunite lost pets with their owners. If your pet escapes your yard or their leash, the person who finds them can scan a QR code on the back of the license to find your contact information and get your furry family member home more quickly. Licenses also allow pets to receive emergency medical treatment from our Animal Control Officers if they are found injured.
• Pet licenses ensure that Lenexa pets are up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations.
• Pet licenses help officers protect the community from dangerous dogs. Licenses help them investigate dog bites.

Pet licenses must be renewed annually and expire on Dec. 31 of each year, regardless of when you first owned your animal.
