Ready to drain your pool? Consider its chemicals.

Swimming pool and hot tub water contains many chemicals – including large amounts of chlorine – that are harmful to water quality and aquatic life. Once your pool water goes into the street or storm drain, it flows directly into streams and lakes.

Follow a few easy steps to properly dispose of your pool water.

  1. Stop adding chlorine to the water, and let the water stand for at least two weeks.
  2. Once you’ve tested the water to confirm it’s dechlorinated, you can use it to water your lawn and garden or drain it slowly to a curb, ditch or storm sewer.
  3. Monitor the pool to make sure the water is draining at the right speed and in the right direction. Don’t let the water flow onto a neighbor’s property or wash away soil.
