Signs of spring — and construction work — are starting to show at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park. The City of Lenexa will invest $16 million to upgrade popular public amenities during 2023–2024. The park will remain open, but the east side will undergo some major transformations.

Aquatic center renovation

Construction fencing already surrounds Indian Trails Aquatic Center, Lenexa’s flagship pool. Over the next year, extensive renovations will address the aging pool’s structural and mechanical issues. The City will also add an exciting mix of amenities requested by the community. These include a lazy river, a water slide complex with an inner tube slide and speed slide, new family restrooms and more parking.  

The pool will reopen for the 2024 summer season with a new name: Sar-Ko-Par Aquatic Center.

Skate park reconstruction

In early summer, construction will begin on a modern new skate park next to current one near the Little Mill Creek Trail tunnel. It will accommodate all skill levels and riding modes — from skateboards and inline skates to BMX bikes, scooters and wheelchairs. 

The City intends to keep the existing aging skate park open for use as long as possible. It will be demolished to make way for an expanded parking lot and other sidewalk improvements. 

When the new skate park opens this fall, it will be called Rolling Magic, named for a privately-run skate park built in Lenexa in the late 1970s.

What to expect during construction

The west side of Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park will continue to host some of Lenexa’s favorite festivals, such as the Great Lenexa BBQ contest and Lenexa Spinach Festival. The Outdoor Concert Series also will take place at the Grand Pavilion this summer and fall. 

Please use extra caution when entering the park at Greenway Lane. Walking paths and access to the Little Mill Creek Trail via the new tunnel under 87th Street Parkway will remain open during construction. But parking on the east side of the park will be limited.
