Lenexa resident Tom Robben joined the Lenexa Farmers Market staff in summer 2022 after retiring from Evergy, Inc. He’s back for a second season with a big smile and easygoing attitude. We decided to ask Tom some questions about his experience so far.

Why did you want to be part of the Lenexa Farmer's Market?

I was searching for an outdoor activity when I received a recommendation for the Market from City of Lenexa employee. Upon visiting the Market, I saw and felt the fun energy and knew immediately I wanted to be a part of something so special.

What has been most rewarding about the Market?

The most rewarding thing is seeing the vendors’ passion for their enterprises. To see so much effort go into their production and then being able to partner with them is very rewarding.

What really makes your day at the Market?

This is a three-part answer. First is seeing my teammates at 6 a.m. on a Saturday all ready to go and no one is (visibly) dragging. Second is interacting with vendors as they arrive and commence with so much energy setting up their stations. Third is the laughter and camaraderie with customers and vendors as the Market goes on.

What do you do when you are not at the Lenexa Farmers Market?

I sleep in past 5:20 a.m. and then awaken to either a day of golf or some social interaction. I do spend a little time with home chores. I also am lucky to work a few hours as a concierge at the Lenexa Public Market. Those cats there are as cool as my Farmers Market team.

What is your favorite food?

I have to go with barbecue. I wake up hungry and usually fix a good-sized traditional breakfast. But if a plate of ribs was waiting at the table at 6 a.m., I wouldn't be sad and I might even have tears of joy!
