race cars made from fresh produce

Lettuce see if you have what it takes to beet the competition during our fifth annual Farm-ula 500 Veggie Race at the Lenexa Farmers Market on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023. Check-in starts at 9 a.m. Judging takes place at 10 a.m., and racing follows promptly afterwards until a winner is crowned.

This construction challenge is open to all ages. Create a race car out of fresh produce to compete in this elimination-style tournament. The veggie cars will race down a 16-foot-long track, and the first to reach the finish line moves on to the next round.

Awards will be given for the top three fastest cars, as well as for best decorated and best representation of the farmers market. Both the racing and decorating competitions will be divided into two age categories: 12 and Under, and 13 and Over.

Space will be provided on race day (starting at 9 a.m.) to construct your car if you have not done this in advance. The construction area will provide various craft items that can be used as decoration. Start thinking now about how to make your edible race car speedy, durable and memorable!

How to participate

Register in advance to ensure your spot, or on the day of the race from 8 a.m. to 9:30 am, if space allows. The entry fee is $5 and includes a pack of supplies that will help you construct a car (four wooden wheels and four axle caps).

Pre-registrants can pick up a supply pack from the Rec Center starting Sept. 1 to begin constructing their car at home. While we encourage you to use produce from the Lenexa Farmers Market for the body of your car, it is not a requirement.
